Volunteers are needed to participate on various BFSA sub-committees (see descriptions below): (email wbrown@umd.edu) to volunteer

Members of the Board of Directors will "Co-Chair", but we need a non-board member to "Co-Chair" as well and act as leads on the committees.  The committees are based on your feedback regarding areas of concerns and opportunities:

1.    Campus Climate - This committee will do the follow-up work that started with the surveys and assessments from 2006.  We have compiled the information, but as you know, we cannot approach the administration with anecdotal information, we need facts and figures in the areas of concern and a strategic plan devised that based on facts and figures, will make recommendations to the university and to the community on how to improve our lives at UM.  The areas to be covered are hiring practices, promotions, demographics, performance reviews and training.  As I understand it, the university is currently performing an assessment for minority faculty, but 'WE' should still cover faculty and students in our discoveries and address the areas mentioned in their surveys.

Roster as of 6/5/07: Willie Brown, Wallace Southerland, Ronald Ziegler, Sharon Simmons-Cook, Lisa K Brown

2.    (Deffered) Opportunities, training, education, want-ads, health, discounts, transportation, participation, scholarships and volunteering - These areas consist mainly of items available to the Campus Community.  We are seeking individuals who could assist in obtaining this information so it can be more readily available to the BFSA body.  Anyone with knowledge, expertise and/or having contacts to obtain any of the above information would be appreciated.  The ultimate goal is to have this information available to the BFSA on our website for easy access.  Making this information more readily accessible will allow the BFSA (you and I) an additional avenue to increase our knowledge of what is available to us on Campus.

Roster as of 6/5/07: Dr. Camille Stillwell

3.    Who's Who - The task is to generate a list of names and numbers of staff regarding their roles and responsibilities.  This is not only their official UM position, but just as important or more so, their off hour talents, hobbies, interests, etc. that they want to share for growth, socializing and fee based work.  Many of us have interests outside UM and many of us offer services that have little to nothing to do with our daily jobs, this database will compile that information so that we can help each other and share similar interests.

Roster as of 6/5/07:  Angela Bass, LaShanna Young, Delores Jackson, Heather Crudup, Tina Rice

4.  (Deffered) Events - Create a listing of events happening on and off campus that would be of interest and value to the community to build morale, increase networking and educate us in areas that we need assistance with i.e. seminars, workshops, nutrition, financial planning, dance, etc.

5.    New Orientation Committee  - This Committee serves as the first interaction employees new to the University have with the Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA).  Committee members will personally familiarize new employees with BFSA.  The Committee will make recommendations and assist in the creation of materials for the BFSA Information Packet which is under development.

Roster as of 6/5/07: Wallace Southerland, Anne Carswell, Aisha S. Washington, Dianne Williams, Barbara Bolton, Ingrid Farrell, Audrey A. Stewart

6.    Cultural Committee - This Committee serves as a vehicle for cultural exchanges within the African Diaspora.  Committee members will decide on topics of interest specific to the campus community.  Topics should cover a wide range of interest.

Roster as of 6/5/07: Tilahun Beyene, Dottie Bass, Heather Crudup, Alganesh T. Piechocinski

7.    Membership / Fundraising Committee - This Committee serves as the heart of BFSA and essential to BFSA to stay active.  Committee members are responsible for increasing the number of individual members and ensuring the retention of these members through the offering of services that meet their needs.  Committee also recommends policies, procedures, and strategies for enhancing membership. Committee members will research and compile a list of fundraising possibilities on and off campus, and the methods of implementation including necessary contact information and estimates of costs and benefits.

Rosters as of 6/5/07: Barbara Bolton, Anne Carswell, Dr. Patricia Thomas, Ingrid Farrell, Walter Ficklin, Audrey A. Stewart

As is evident by the beautiful sea of color at the anniversary special meeting, this is YOUR BFSA and we contribute to all facets of life at the university.  It is time for us to strengthen and support each other through our combined strengths.  I look forward to our successes in changing our lives at UM and therefore making UM a better place for all.
